Top 5 things you should never tell your lawyer
Finding the right lawyer can be a difficult decision, even when you know you have a solid case. If you are running into lawyers who are continually declining to work with you, there is a possibility you might be saying the wrong things to them. Here are five things you should never say to a lawyer.
1. My case will be easy money for you
Your lawyer is committed to working hard to help you win your case and receive the most favorable outcome that can be awarded. Don’t insult your legal professional by presenting your case as if you have all the angles figured out. There is no such thing as easy money for lawyers. They have put in the time and effort to receive the education and licensing to represent you.
2. I have already done the work for you
Lawyers appreciate working with clients who take their cases seriously. The flipside of that is a lawyer will likely be insulted by the implication that the work you have done on your case trumps their experience and expertise. Save the work for the professionals, that’s what they studied for and have worked on.
3. I forgot I had an appointment
A lawyer is not likely to be interested in representing you if you do not show up to your appointments, or even honestly if you are late. They need to see you are as committed to success as they are. Time is valuable and just as much as your lawyer wants the best for you, they want the same for their other clients who they have committed time with as well.
4. I’ve already talked to a lot of other lawyers
If you have already spoken with numerous other attorneys that is a red flag to a lawyer. The sentiment could be that there is a reason to stay away from your case whether that is you, your attitude, the evidence, or something of that nature.
5. I don’t have all my documents
Your time with an attorney has a price tag. By showing up to appointments unprepared and without the documentation they need to represent you only sets you back financially and frustrates your legal representation.
Show up as your best self, with your best foot forward, and your attorney will do the same for you.
