I have a court date, now what?

Hearing you have a court date might not incite the same feelings of excitement and butterflies as other types of dates. Instead, you might be feeling an anxiousness or fear that you can’t shake. While you may have more questions than answers, there are plenty of resources to help you prepare for your big day.

Better late than never does not apply here

A court date is not an appointment you want to miss, or even be late to. If you do not show up, or if you are late, the judge can dismiss the case you were hoping to fight, or they can levy a judgement against you that you were hoping to prevent. It is imperative that you arrive on time the day of your hearing, but sometimes life happens. There are things that are unavoidable. The court system does allow for such instances, but you must do the legwork to ensure you have properly handled your situation. If something has come up that is a legitimate reason to miss your court appearance, you can request for it to be “continued.” Make sure you do this in writing, make sure you submit your request properly and ahead of time and make sure you keep a copy of what you’ve submitted. Also, it is very important that you follow up with the court to make sure your motion for a continuation has been approved.

Be prepared

While it may feel like you know your case inside and out and you have memorized every single fact, date, witness, event and detail; courtroom anxiety is real and you would be best served to have everything written out when your court appearance occurs. Practice makes perfect. Prepare your statements and questions and rehearse with trusted friends who will help you put your best foot forward. The idea that you can just “wing it” when it comes to a court proceeding is a fool-proof plan for failure. If you have evidence, bring it. Saying “I have proof” will not sway the judge in any way.

Dress for success

dress for success

The courtroom might not be the best location for your brand new sequined dress, but on the other hand, your jeans full of holes and t-shirts with foul language are not your best bet either. A court hearing is a formal occasion and the courtroom is a place to show respect and reverence. Dressing appropriately is key to showing the judge you mean business and you are taking your situation seriously.

Actions can speak louder than words

The courtroom is not the place to try and beat the latest level of Candy Crush. While technology addictions are a real thing in our society, when it is your day in court, it is time to put the phone away. The courtroom is also not a place to eat, drink and be merry. Even things like chewing gum can come off disrespectful and you don’t need anything going against you with the judge. Being in court is also not the best place to stage your latest Instagram photoshoot or to send your friends a Snapchat. If you hope to be successful in court, you need to prove your intent with your actions.

Keep calm and carry the law on your side

Being in court can definitely be a scary event, especially if you’ve never been there. But don’t let the unknown or the fear lose your case for you. Be prepared and put your best foot forward. Do everything you can to ensure your success and you will hopefully walk away with no regrets.
